How is a patient's usual GP assigned during the registration process in EMIS Web?

Usual GP selection during registration

When registering a patient, you choose a usual GP from the drop-down in the Add Patient screen. EMIS Web checks whether that GP has a valid GP code recorded in the Registration Workflow Configuration. If they do, the patient is registered under that GP. If not, EMIS Web automatically assigns the patient to the senior partner for the organisation.

If the patient is returning to the practice, EMIS Web also looks for the previously registered GP. As long as that GP is still active and linked to a valid GP code, the patient is assigned to them again. If the code is missing or the GP status has changed, EMIS Web reverts to the step above, typically defaulting to the senior partner.

Recording the correct usual GP at the point of registration helps avoid confusion about who is responsible for the patient’s care. It ensures a clear single point of contact for both clinical and administrative tasks, saving time for administrators and improving clarity for the whole team.
