The EPS - Direct to Main Pharmacy function enables the automatic electronic transmission of prescriptions to a patient's nominated primary pharmacy through the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS). This feature helps streamline the prescription process, ensuring a seamless and efficient medication supply for patients.
Functionality Overview
With EPS, patients choose a convenient dispensing organisation, typically a pharmacy, where prescriptions are sent digitally. This reduces the need for paper prescriptions, which in turn cuts down on unnecessary administrative tasks for healthcare providers.
To use this functionality effectively in EMIS Web:
- Access the Medication section from the patient's Care Record.
- Ensure a pharmacy is nominated in the Nominations section. This can be set or changed directly within the software.
- Once set, prescriptions are sent electronically to the preferred pharmacy, ready for patient collection.
Benefits of Direct to Main Pharmacy
"The functionalities of EPS significantly reduce administrative load and errors, allowing practitioners to focus more on patient care rather than prescription logistics."
This service minimises the chances of prescription errors, enhances patient mobility, and provides convenience, especially during times when patients cannot access their usual pharmacy (e.g., due to travel).
Furthermore, because EPS allows for prescriptions to be tracked electronically, any discrepancies or changes in patient medication needs are easily managed, enabling better communication between pharmacists and healthcare providers.
Note: If a pharmacy or dispensing organisation needs to be changed, this can be done within EMIS Web without manually intercepting prescriptions already in process.
