You can configure different appointment durations in two main ways:
1. Use Reasons and Duration Warnings
Reasons let you attach a preferred duration to that reason (for instance, “Complex medication review – 20 minutes”). When an appointment is booked using that reason, EMIS Web displays a warning if the chosen slot is shorter than the configured duration. This approach helps you ensure that certain appointment types have longer times allocated.
2. Create Session Templates for Specific Slot Types
Alternatively, set up separate session templates with different slot durations. For example, you could create a 20-minute session template exclusively for more in-depth reviews or 10-minute sessions for simple follow-ups. Specify the Slot Duration when creating the timed session template, and select the required Slot Type if you want it set by default. Users can then choose the relevant template when planning the clinic so that each slot type has an appropriate duration.
By customising session durations or linking reasons to longer times, you save administrators from constantly juggling overbooked or under-used slots, and improve patient flow.
