In EMIS Web, repeat dispensing is a feature utilised for patients with stable, long-term conditions requiring regular medication. This functionality streamlines the prescription process by allowing healthcare providers to issue a master prescription alongside a batch of numbered dispensing prescriptions.
Identifying Suitable Patients
Repeat dispensing is ideal for patients on consistent long-term medication plans for conditions that are unlikely to fluctuate, such as hypertension, diabetes, and asthma. Additionally, it benefits those who self-manage seasonal conditions or require specific treatments during scenarios like a flu pandemic. Note that controlled drugs are excluded from this process.
Issuing and Managing Repeat Dispensing
Start by accessing the Medication section from the EMIS Web menu under Care Record. Add a course of medication as you typically would, but change the Rx Type to Repeat Dispensing. Specify the number of authorised issues, which can go up to a year. When amending existing medication, select the item, click RX Type, and choose Repeat Dispensing.
By streamlining the prescription process, repeat dispensing reduces paperwork, enhances efficiency, and frees up valuable time for staff, allowing practices to focus more on patient care.
Managing Amendments and Cancellations
Should there be a need to amend a course, select the desired medication, and opt to change the prescription type or update details like review dates. If the dosage or quantity changes, any pending issues will automatically cancel, necessitating a reissue.
To cancel a repeat dispensing issue, follow the standard cancellation procedure. Activating the right setting in Medication Configuration will allow entire prescriptions to cancel alongside individual issues when applicable.
Printing and Reviewing
When printing repeat dispensing prescriptions, patients receive one RA page to retain and multiple RD pages per issue to present at the pharmacy. The total number of authorised issues appears on the RA page, with RD pages incrementally numbered.
