Selecting a Service for a Referral in the NHS e-Referral Portal

Clinicians can create referrals using the NHS e-Referral Service (eRS) within EMIS Web by following a streamlined process designed to facilitate efficient and accurate patient care coordination.

Steps to Select a Service for a Referral

Firstly, ensure that you are logged into EMIS Web with a smartcard, as this access is essential for utilising the eRS features. Once logged in, navigate to the Consultations section under Care Record. At this point, either select an existing patient or be prompted to choose one. It's important to manage any PDS differences if necessary.

Within the Consultation screen, click Referral on the left-hand pane, then go to NHS e-Referral, and select your required urgency level: Routine, Urgent, or 2 Week Rule. This action will launch the eRS portal within the EMIS Web environment. Here, you will see the UBRN, a unique reference number for the referral, on the Service Selection screen.

Choosing Your Referral Service

Using the eRS portal, clinicians can select the appropriate service based on the patient's needs. Once you have pinpointed the service that fits the referral criteria, confirm your decision by clicking Service Selected. Continue with the referral process by completing all necessary details on the NHS e-RS Referral screen within EMIS Web. Note that some information will be pre-filled, but you will need to fill out the mandatory fields indicated by a red asterisk (*) to successfully log the service for the referral.

Imagine having a centralised location where all referral options, tasks, and status updates are managed. This integration in EMIS Web streamlines the process, allowing focus to remain on patient care rather than administration.

In cases where the UBRN retrieval process fails, you will receive a prompt to either retry or defer, indicating steps to ensure completion of the referral process later.
