For the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) in EMIS Web, it's important that the smartcards used by practice users are assigned specific Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) roles to carry out relevant prescribing activities efficiently and securely. The following roles should be added to the smartcards depending on the responsibilities of each user within the EPS framework:
- B0420 Independent Prescribing: Allows the application of electronic signatures to electronic prescriptions.
- B0440 Supplementary Prescribing: Provides access to apply electronic signatures with supplementary prescribing restrictions.
- B0058 Nurse Prescribers Formulary (NPF) Prescribing: Enables electronic signature application but under nurse formulary restrictions.
- B0278 Perform Prescription Preparation: Allows performing all prescription functionalities (such as adding, amending, and preparing prescriptions) except applying electronic signatures.
- B0422 Reauthorise Medication: Grants access to reauthorise expired repeat medication regimes.
- B0468 Cancel Prescription: Permits the requesting of cancellation for electronic prescriptions or to cancel barcoded or standard prescriptions.
- B0401 View Patient Medication: Access to view and reprint prescriptions without modifying them.
- B0825/B0830 Amend/Perform Patient Demographics: Allows setting and amending patient nominations for EPS functionalities.
"Utilising specific RBAC roles ensures that the handling of EPS within the practice meets security standards, enhances efficiency, and maintains compliance, significantly reducing wait times and resource usage."
Selecting the appropriate RBAC role on a smartcard enables practitioners to manage electronic prescriptions securely, ensuring that patient's medication needs are met seamlessly with minimal administrative burden.
