Electronic prescription tokens play a crucial role in the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) by providing a secure and efficient way to manage prescriptions. These tokens are essentially non-legal versions of paper prescriptions that allow patients to collect their prescriptions from a pharmacy of their choice.
Creating Electronic Prescription Tokens
To create an electronic prescription token in EMIS Web, begin by accessing the Medication section. Navigate from the EMIS Web menu under Care Record and select Medication. If you haven't selected a patient yet, you'll be prompted to choose one.
Within the Medication screen, click on 'Add Drug' and type the name of the medication required. Select the appropriate item and fill in the details such as dosage and quantity. If needed, adjust the duration of the course or specify any required pharmacy information.
Proceed to the Issue screen where you can choose to print a prescription token as part of the electronic prescription process. This is managed via the electronic prescription options configured on the Issue screen.
Benefit: Using electronic prescription tokens reduces the administrative burden and minimises errors associated with handwritten prescriptions, thus streamlining the process for both prescribers and pharmacists.
Why Use Electronic Prescription Tokens?
Electronic prescription tokens offer flexibility for patients who haven't nominated a pharmacy. Patients can take these tokens to any pharmacy of their choice, where the prescription can be downloaded and dispensed. This system ensures prescriptions are tracked, reduces lost paperwork, and provides a seamless experience for both healthcare providers and patients.
