Sending a prescription to the correct nominated dispenser under the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) is pivotal for smooth and accurate medication dispensing. Here’s how you can ensure a prescription reaches the right dispenser:
Check and Set the Patient's Nomination
Ensure that the patient has a nominated pharmacy set up in their record. To do this:
- Log in to EMIS Web with your smartcard.
- Access the Medication section from the Care Record.
- In the Manage ETP Nominations screen, verify the patient's nominated pharmacy or dispensing appliance contractor. This is where their prescriptions will be automatically sent.
- Update or add a nomination if necessary by searching for the correct dispensing contractor by name or postcode.
Handling Multiple Nominations
If a patient has more than one nomination, such as a primary pharmacy and a dispensing appliance contractor, ensure you've selected the correct dispenser at the time of prescription issuance. A warning message will alert you if there is a mismatch with the patient’s nominated pharmacy.
One-off Nominations
If a patient needs a prescription sent to a different pharmacy on a one-off basis, use the one-off nomination feature:
- During the prescribing process, select a temporary nomination for a specific item, ensuring it overrides the existing primary nomination for that issue.
- Remember, changes to regular nominations will not affect one-off nominations already set.
Verify EPS Setup

Always ensure there are no discrepancies in the Personal Demographics Service (PDS) details, as this may impact the proper transmission of prescriptions. Resolve any differences noted by the red PDS icon in EMIS Web.
