Overview
In EMIS Web, you can quickly register a new patient by accessing the Registration module. Make sure your user profile has permission to manage patient demographics. Having the patient’s details on hand—such as full name, date of birth, and any available NHS number—makes the process quicker.
Key Steps
- Access Registration: From the EMIS Web menu, point to Registration and choose Registration. Ensure a patient is not already selected, or deselect them if needed.
- Add a New Patient: Click Add Patient on the ribbon and select the appropriate patient type, for example Regular or Temporary. Enter as many details as possible to help EMIS Web trace an existing record.
- Complete Mandatory Fields: Fill in required information (e.g. family name, given name, date of birth, gender, address). Mandatory fields are marked with a red asterisk. If no local match is found, EMIS Web may check the PDS if available and if you are logged in with a smartcard.
- Select or Create the Patient: If EMIS Web suggests a match, validate the details carefully and click Register Patient. If no match is found, click Continue to Create New Patient to set up a fresh record.
- Finalise Registration: On the registration screens, confirm any additional information (e.g. usual GP, contact methods). Save your changes. The patient is now registered and ready for appointments or further record updates.
By verifying patient information at the point of registration, your staff spend less time correcting demographic errors later, helping maintain data quality and continuity of care.
Re-registering a Former Patient
If a patient returns to your practice, select Re-Register on the ribbon and confirm any new details (such as a different address). Where necessary, change their patient type first with Change Patient Type.
