Log in to EMIS Web using an authorised smartcard. This allows you to access the Personal Demographics Service (PDS) and ensure the system recognises synchronised records. Non-synchronised records are flagged with a red icon, which requires attention to match EMIS Web and PDS details.

- Always cross-check core details: Name, NHS number, date of birth, and address.
- Use wildcards if needed, matching parts of names or postcodes to broaden your search.
- In the event of multiple matches, carefully verify which attributes correlate correctly to the patient you intend to trace.

Handling Multiple Matches
In cases of multiple potential matches, scrutinise every possible element—such as different family names, shared addresses, or similar postcodes—to single out the precise patient. When uncertain, defer the process to gather further information.
