Hero Health - EMIS Web Support Guide

How is patient consent managed for SCR uploads in EMIS Web?

In EMIS Web, managing patient consent for Summary Care Record (SCR) uploads is crucial for ensuring the correct sharing of patient information. SCRs are managed under an implied consent model unless a patient actively chooses to opt out. This means that, by default, a patient's core and additional information is uploaded and stored on the Spine, a secure NHS database unless they express a different preference.

Consent Options for SCR

There are several consent options available:

  • Implied consent: This is the default setting where both core and additional patient information is uploaded unless the patient objects.
  • Express consent: Patients can specifically choose to have their SCR, including additional information, shared.
  • Express dissent: Patients can opt out entirely, ensuring no SCR is uploaded to the Spine.
If a patient offers no explicit decision about their SCR sharing preference, EMIS Web will assume implied consent, helping to ensure seamless, uninterrupted medical care.

Recording and Managing Consent

You can record a patient’s consent preferences at any time, even before your organisation has enabled the SCR module. This is crucial to maintain up-to-date patient preferences, optimising consent documentation from the outset of patient registration.

To modify a patient's SCR consent preference, access the Patient Consent Preference screen via EMIS Web. You can update choices like implied or express dissent, adding clinical terms as needed.

Automatic SCR Updates

For practices already using SCR, updates to patient summaries are automatically sent to the Spine following specific actions within EMIS Web, such as modifying patient medication or adjusting allergies. This automation improves efficiency by reducing manual tasks for clinicians and practice administrators.
