Family/Relationship Icons in EMIS Web
EMIS Web uses a set of icons on the Family/Relationship Links tab to give a quick view of how individuals are connected to the patient. These icons will appear beside each name in the patient’s list of relationships:
- Child icon: The person is under 18.
- House icon: The person shares the same household.
- C: The person is a carer.
- MC: The person is the main carer.
If the person is also registered at your practice, you’ll see an option to View Care Record in the Detailed View pane. Details are blank for non-registered contacts added via free text, but you can still track that relationship in the patient’s record.

Adding and Maintaining Relationships
You can add a relationship using the Add Relationship button on the Family/Relationship Links tab. Select whether you’re linking to an existing registered patient or adding a new entry via free text. Note that relationships aren’t reciprocal: if you add one person as a sibling, you’ll need to update the other person’s record too if you want it shown there.
To edit or remove a link, highlight the relevant entry and choose from the ribbon options (Edit Relationship or Delete Relationship). This ensures ongoing accuracy for each patient’s family or carer network.
