Overview
EMIS Web currently provides patient data via GP Connect in a structured and coded format – commonly described as Access Record Structured. This allows other accredited IT systems to import and process details such as medications, allergies and immunisations for direct care. However, EMIS Web itself does not import or process external structured data. This limitation is part of how the interoperability solution is designed across different clinical systems. The accreditation to process and reconcile structured data rests with systems that receive it, rather than EMIS Web.
Provider-Only Role
By providing data to accredited external systems, EMIS Web helps reduce the need for manual duplication or re-entry of patient information. Once other systems have imported or processed these details, updates are typically sent back to EMIS Web as final or provisional records that users can review and file. This requirement ensures that each organisation maintains oversight of incoming data, helping to maintain quality and security.
"Clinicians in different organisations can see key details instantly, saving time and avoiding delays in patient care."
Configuration Steps
- Enable the Access Record Structured option in Organisation Configuration under GP Connect settings.
- Make sure your practice is connected to the Spine so that structured data can be requested by external accredited systems.
- Confirm you’ve recorded patient data sharing preferences appropriately.
Once this is in place, GP Connect helps ensure other healthcare providers can quickly view the latest information recorded in EMIS Web, while EMIS Web focuses on providing data as the patient’s official GP record system.
