Key Steps for Recording Patient Consent
To share data via GP Connect, you must record the patient’s data sharing preference in their EMIS Web record. This involves using specific SNOMED CT codes to reflect whether consent is given or refused. The steps are:
- Open the patient’s record: Navigate to their demographic or clinical record.
- Record consent codes: Apply the relevant SNOMED codes, for example “Consent given for upload to local shared electronic record (417528008)” or “Refused consent for upload to local shared electronic record (416409005).”
- Confirm your access: When you attempt to view the record from another organisation, EMIS Web will prompt you to confirm permission to view.
Why This Helps
When patient preferences are clearly recorded, clinicians across other healthcare organisations can safely access up-to-date GP records. This reduces the need to chase paper records or contact surgeries by phone, saving time and ensuring consistent care.
“Properly capturing patient consent up front can save hours of administrative work later on.”
Registering a Temporary Patient
If another organisation needs to view a patient’s record, register them as a temporary patient in EMIS Web. Once the registration is set up, synchronise their record with the Spine. With the patient’s consent in place, you can view their GP record through the External Views section of the Care Record Summary screen.
