Cancelling a Single Item on a Multi-item EPS Prescription
When managing electronic prescription service (EPS) prescriptions in EMIS Web, it's possible to cancel a single item from a multi-item prescription without affecting the validity of the remaining items. Here's how to do it efficiently:
First, identify the specific item you need to cancel within the prescription on your EMIS Web system. Navigate to the patient's medication screen, right-click on the relevant item, and select Cancel Issue.
Once you trigger the cancellation, the EPS quickly processes your request. However, if the item has already been downloaded by the dispenser but not yet dispensed, the cancellation might be rejected. In this case, reach out to the dispenser and request that they return the prescription to the spine before proceeding with your cancellation.
Having the ability to cancel specific items can prevent unnecessary medication, improving patient safety and maintaining accurate records without disrupting the availability of other prescribed medication.
After the dispenser has returned the prescription, you must manually confirm the cancellation's success by marking it as cancelled within the Workflow Manager under EPS Rejections. This manual step ensures the patient’s health record reflects the accurate medication status.
If the item was dispensed already, liaising with the patient to prevent the use of unwanted medication is essential. Use the EPS Prescription Tracker to check and verify the updated status and ensure all records are kept current.
Maintaining precise records saves time for healthcare professionals and supports safer prescribing practices.
