Accessing EMIS Web with a physical smartcard for the first time

Before logging on, make sure you have a functioning smartcard reader connected to your PC. Keep your smartcard and PIN confidential to maintain data security.

  • Insert your smartcard: Place your physical card into the reader. A prompt screen will appear.
  • Read and accept the agreement: On the GEM Authenticate screen, type your smartcard PIN to confirm you accept the usage terms.
  • Select your role (if required): If you have multiple roles assigned to your smartcard, choose the one that aligns with the tasks you are about to perform.
  • Open EMIS Web: Double-click the EMIS Web icon on your desktop. A short on-screen message, such as “smartcard detected,” may appear on your homepage.
  • Sync your smartcard: If prompted, type your PIN again to associate the smartcard with your EMIS Web account. This enables single sign-on, so you won’t need your EMIS Web password every time.
Many users find that single sign-on with a smartcard not only enhances patient privacy but also saves time by removing the need to juggle multiple passwords.

Security Tip: If you mistype your PIN three times consecutively, your card will be locked. Contact your practice manager or local system administrator for help unlocking or replacing it.
