To set up a generic drugs-only formulary in EMIS Web, you need to navigate through the configuration settings to ensure the formulary meets your practice’s requirements.
Access Formulary Configuration
Log into EMIS Web and click on the System Tools menu. From there, select Configuration followed by Formulary Setup. This section houses all the tools needed to create and modify formularies.
Creating a New Formulary
To begin creating a new formulary, click on New Formulary. You will be prompted to provide a name for your formulary, ideally something indicative such as ‘Generic Drugs Only’ for quick reference by all users.
Selecting Drugs
Within the drug selection menu, opt for Generic Drugs to ensure only these appear in the prescription options. Use the search feature to add specific generics to your list. This simplifies the selection process during prescribing, significantly minimising the chance of selecting a brand-specific or non-preferred alternative.
Set Default Prescribing Options
After selecting the required generic drugs, set these as default options within your formulary. This ensures that during the prescribing process, the generic version is prioritised, facilitating easy and quick prescription by practitioners.
Activate Your Formulary
Once satisfied with the drug list, save and activate your formulary. The selected drugs will now be the primary options available for all practitioners and can greatly aid in improving prescribing efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
By using a generic drugs-only formulary, practices can save on costs and ensure uniformity in prescribing, ultimately ensuring better patient care through the use of tried and tested medication options.
