How can I resolve an error message about a missing Doctor Index Number when issuing medication?

Check Your User Role and Smartcard

Ensure the person issuing the medication has an appropriate prescribing role and is logged on with a valid Smartcard. If your Smartcard isn’t synchronised, EMIS Web will not recognise your Doctor Index Number.

Reauthorise Under a Current Prescriber

If the prescriber who originally authored the medication has left the practice or is not set up correctly, you may see this error. Reauthorise the prescription by selecting a valid user who is properly configured as a prescriber in EMIS Web. This ensures an active Doctor Index Number is recorded.

Verify Configuration Settings

  • Stamp Doctor: Check that the “To be signed by” field points to a valid prescriber.
  • Fallback Options: If your configuration defaults to the patient’s usual doctor, try clearing that option or choosing an available clinician with prescribing privileges.
  • PDS Differences: If the patient has unresolved PDS differences, fix these to avoid further errors when issuing medication.

Tip: Correctly setting the prescriber details ensures you have a valid audit trail and minimises interruptions when issuing or reauthorising medication.
